Michigan is a Dutch amateur band that was founded in Drenthe in September 1970 and consists of:
• Albert de Vries (guitar, vocals)
• Jan Slagter (guitar)
• Jan Geurt Hupkes (drums, vocals)
• Gerry Hut (bass)
Now, almost 50 years after its foundation, it's time to tell our story. It starts with Gerry when he received an old classical guitar from his aunt at the age of 15. This did not go unnoticed in the small village of Ruinen, because almost no one had a guitar at the time. Jan, a fellow villager of Gerry, seemed to like that and managed to get hold of an old electric bass guitar. Through an acquaintance of Gerry, Jan Geurt was approached to play the drums. This was received with enthusiasm and Jan Geurt immediately proceeded to purchase a drum set. A classmate of Jan knew someone who also had an electric guitar and even had lessons. This made Albert's entry into the band a fact.
As autodidacts, we started replaying well-known rock songs. We gradually built up a full-length repertoire with which we were going to perform. After school we went to work as a police officer, bookkeeper, plumber and house painter. Due to the combination of work and evening study and the fact that Albert moved to Amsterdam for his work, we could no longer perform. Because we wanted to stay busy with music, we decided to set up a regular weekly music evening with the aim of writing our own songs. Albert did his best to be present as much as possible.
In the first song it turned out that the common preference was blues rock, while for each of us personally pop, country, jazz, rock, metal, folk and even classical belonged to the idiom. Because of this wide variety, the music evening also grew into a social gathering. This was so inspiring that sometimes four songs could arise in one evening. Because we did not experience any limitations (“Songs Unlimited”), our own style has developed over the years. We have named our music "Benderse Rock", after an area near Ruinen.
Jan had meanwhile started to study recording technology; the cassette recorder in the garage has since been replaced by a fully equipped studio. Over the years we have written almost 100 songs. Because we now have more free time as well as resources, the time has come to record our songs. We chose "Crook On The Loose" as the first song. Our good friend Roel Roelofs made the clip. We intend to release our songs as much as possible in the coming years.
We hope you enjoy our music and are looking forward to your response.
